Raiders, Jackets open strong; tournament title still up in air

@@C

Stonewall Jackson softball coach Ira DeGrood didn't mind his players fooling him in their season-opening invitational, which involved four Manassas area teams.

DeGrood thought pitching would be the Raiders' weakness, but Nikki Sebra and Melissa Wilfong surprised him with solid outings in wins over Osbourn ( 12-6) and Manassas Park ( 27-2) last weekend.

The Raiders and Osbourn Park played to a 5-5 tie Saturday before rain hit. The game will be played in its entirety at 11: 30 a. m. Saturday at Stonewall.

Sebra, Staci Ricks, Pam Eberly and Julie Bernhard carried the Raiders offensively in the wins.

'' I thought our inexperience might lead to mental errors but we executed well running the bases and bunting,'' DeGrood said.

Pitching will be the key to Eagles' fortunes

@@C

Osbourn's pitching will have to come around for the Eagles to inch their way up the Northwestern District standings.

Someone from the foursome of Suzanne Gerson, Crissy Bibb, Katie Croisetiere and Heidi Leiter will have to step forward on the mound and provide the Eagles with a reliable hurler.

Senior Krista Austin is solid at catcher. Gerson and left fielder Christine Nebling are the only other seniors on the team. There are only two juniors.

Center fielder Cara Cheatwood and third baseman Jenny Seningen are gone from last season's team. Leiter may take Cheatwood's spot in center and either Taryn Shlanta or Rana Carlucci will handle third in place of Seningen.

Nicole Genderon, Crissy Bibb and Mary Beth Black are in the hunt for the job at first. Gerson and Croisetiere are vying for second base. Chrissie Elliott is the probable shortstop.

Black could be in line for the right field position.

If the pitching and defense come around and if such young players as Genderon produce at the plate, the Eagles could be in the process of building a solid team for Coach Sonny Hagy.

Eagles bury Broad Run in tuneup for biggest game

BYLINE: By GREG FRAZIER

@@C

Missy Peters had 24 points and 11 rebounds despite sitting out the fourth quarter to lead Osbourn's girls basketball team to a 79-25 defeat of the visiting Broad Run Spartans.

Four girls scored in double figures for the Eagles, who outrebounded their younger rivals 51-19. The win, Osbourn's 19th straight in the Northwestern District over the last two years, served as a tune-up for its showdown with district co-leader Park View Tuesday night. Both teams went into the game 5-0 in the league.

Peters, who leads Osbourn in both scoring and rebounding, had 14 points in the first period as the Eagles took a 28-4 lead. It was 44-6 at halftime.

Junior Katie Sinback and senior Cara Cheatwood added 14 and 13 points respectively for Osbourn. Each had nine rebounds as well.

Senior Laura Mason, a part-time starter for coach Anne Yeatts, came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven boards. Sophomore Heidi Leiter had eight points and Krista Austin added five. Mason and Marijo Augusti led the Eagles in assists with four each.

Yeatts noted an easy victory is not always the way a coach likes to warm up for the team's biggest game of the year. However she thought the 54-point winning margin would serve a good purpose in preparations for Park View.

'' Everybody got to play. Everyone feels good about the game. And not only did they get to play but the second five went in and increased the lead at almost the same pace as the first five,'' said Yeatts.

Senior Jennifer Petry was the lone bright spot for Broad Run. The three-year starter had team-high numbers in points ( 17), rebounds ( 10). steals ( 5) and assists ( 2). Petry was also the only Spartan to block a shot.

In junior varsity action Osbourn kept its unbeaten record intact with a 49-18 romp over Broad Run. Chrissy Elliott led the Eagles with 11 points. Missy Augusti had eight points. Rochelle Griffin, Katie Croisetiere and Brande Lowe each added seven.

Eagles struggle, beat Broad Run

BYLINE: By GREG FRAZIER

@@C

ASHBURN

Osbourn basketball fans are not used to much excitement concerning the Broad Run Spartans.

In recent memory, a date with Broad Run has always translated into a rout for the Osbourn girls. But not this year.

'' Broad Run has some better athletes than they've had in the past,'' said Osbourn coach Anne Yeatts, noting the Spartans had been considered a Rone-girl'' team the last three years with Jennifer Petry leading the way.

'' Plus Broad Run is better coached and a little better organized than in the past,'' Yeatts added.

The result of Broad Run's improvement was a scare of Yeatt's district-leading Eagles on Thursday night in Loudoun County.

After trading the lead back and forth, Osbourn pulled ahead in the fourth quarter for a 48-40 win behind the work of senior Marijo Augusti and junior Katie Croisetiere.

The eight-point margin says a lot for Broad Run, but it also represents how badly Osbourn ( 8-2) has played since opening the year with four straight wins.

'' Basically, we've played very poorly,'' said Yeatts. '' We haven't put it together. We've had good third or fourth quarters that kept us in games or allowed us to win. As far as putting together a solid game offensively and defensively, we just haven't done it and I don't really know why.''

Yeatts is hoping her team will be sparked by the return of junior Heidi Leiter. The point guard has missed three weeks with an ankle injury, but was expected to return for Tuesday's showdown at district co-leader Park View.

Croisetiere, who became a starter when Leiter went down, continues to impress Yeatts. After nine points, seven rebounds and six steals at Broad Run, Croisetiere will probably hold on to her starting spot when Leiter returns.

Augusti has been the one bit of consistency in a two-week stretch that has left Yeatts disappointed with the team's all- around play. The second-year starter had 10 points and 10 rebounds against Broad Run to go along with five assists and two steals. Augusti is second on the team in both steals and assists behind senior Dana Verrone.

'' Marijo's play the past two weeks has gotten better. She knows she needs to become a bigger part of our offense and she's looking for her shot more,'' said Yeatts.

'' Most importantly, Marijo's played very aggressively, and we need that,'' Yeatts added.

Statistically, the Eagles continue to be led by senior Katie Sinback. The 5-foot-11 center averages 13 points and 10 rebounds, yet her performances seem to have gone almost unnoticed, perhaps because so much was expected of her this season.

Sinback had seven points and four rebounds despite sitting out most of the second and third periods at Broad Run. The one knock against Sinback has been her inability to consistently hit the short jumper.

'' We don't have much in the way of an outside shot so we end up forcing the ball in to Katie and she's been missing the easy shots in the paint,'' said Yeatts.

Another reason for the mere eight-point margin at Broad Run was Osbourn's turnovers. The Eagles had a season-high 26 giveaways, three fewer than the Spartans.

Other notables at Broad Run included Verrone ( eight points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists), Krista Austin ( five points, 10 rebounds and two assists) and Tonya Corbin who came off the bench to spell Sinback and responded with four points, three rebounds and a steal in limited action.

Osbourn trailed 11-10 after one period before tying the game 21-21 behind a big second period by Verrone and Augusti.

Verrone, Augusti, Austin and Croisetiere all played well in the third period as Osbourn pulled in front 33-25.

Broad Run refused to fold and fought back to tie the game, 40-40, with 1: 30 left in the final period.

Croisetiere had four points and two steals in the final 70 seconds to help Osbourn seal the victory.

Osbourn Park knocked off Manassas Park ( 18-1) and beat Osbourn ( 27-3) to open the season. The Jackets squandered a 5-2 lead against Stonewall.

Included in Angie Bland's six hits over two games were two home runs in the third inning against Manassas Park.

Laura Smith collected seven hits during the tournament and Annette LaGuardia pitched 11 1/ 3 innings, giving up two earned runs.

'' We didn't look good defensively or on the mound in our scrimmages but we started to put it together against Manassas Park,'' Jacket coach Dan Clendaniel said. '' Against Stonewall we laid back too much.''

Osbourn led Manassas Park, 23-1, on Saturday when their game was called. The Eagles had blown a 6-1 lead against Stonewall the previous day because of errors and sloppy baserunning.

'' We saw what we needed to work on,'' said Osbourn coach Sonny Hagy, whose team received solid pitching from Katie Croisetiere. She and Krista Austin combined for 10 hits in the tournament.

The blowout losses dimmed Manassas Park's season opener.

'' It's pretty frustrating right now,'' Cougar coach Ralph Moore said. '' When the pitchers threw strikes we didn't field and sometimes the pitchers couldn't find the plate.''

The Cougars are down but not out. Edwards said their practice Monday was as spirited as any this season.

Denise Tanks and Michelle Martin provided some spark at the plate, but the Cougars spent so much time in the field they were exhausted when it came time to pick up a bat.

Manassas Park was scheduled to play Rappahannock on Tuesday, Brentsville District on Friday and Stonewall Mt.-Jackson next week, teams not in the upper echelon of the Bull Run District.

'' If we can be competitive, it would be helpful,'' Moore said.

Eagles survive rough week

BYLINE: By GREG FRAZIER

@@C

The past week has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride for Osbourn's girls basketball team.

The Eagles celebrated wins over district rivals Handley, Loudoun County and Warren County. In between Osbourn managed to drop its second game of the year to James Wood, 60-58, in overtime Monday night.

James Wood came to Manassas and jumped out to a 25-point lead before the Eagles battled back. Led by seniors Marijo Augusti and Katie Sinback, Osbourn fought back to tie the game then take the lead. James Wood, which had as good of a perimeter game as any team Osbourn will face this year, nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds to force overtime.

The visiting Colonels took the victory by outscoring Osbourn 4-2 in overtime.

Osbourn bounced back the following night against Warren County. The upstart Wildcats brought a 3-0 league record into Manassas and gave the Eagles all they wanted.

Take away the final minute of the third period and Osbourn led the entire way behind 14 points and 12 rebounds from Sinback. Junior Katie Croisetiere, who has shined since becoming a starter two weeks ago, had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Augusti added six points, eight boards and two steals for the Eagles. Dana Verrone had three points, three assists and two steals. Krista Austin contributed six rebounds.

Tuesday's victory left Osbourn 8-3 overall, 3-0 in the Northwestern District.

The Eagles picked up a surprisingly difficult win at Loudoun County Thursday, getting a game-high 14 points and eight rebounds from Croisetiere in a 39-30 decision.

In a very physical game, Loudoun County stayed close to Osbourn by denying the Eagles the easy transition baskets which they had gotten in each of the previous wins this year.

The Eagles' fast break was hampered by the Loudoun County gym which is several feet shorter than the standard 94 feet. Yeatts thoughtJthe few feet made a difference.

The Osbourn coach noted it is always uplifting to win in Leesburg. '' This was a good win,'' said Yeatts. '' We've played terribly here over the years... Any time we can win at Loudoun County, it's big. This is a tough place to win.''

In addition to Croisetiere, Osbourn was led by Sinback's 11 points and six rebounds. Verrone had eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Osbourn received some good news Monday when point guard Heidi Leiter had her cast removed. Leiter had become the team's offensive leader before injuring her ankle at James Wood two weeks ago.

Leiter is expected to be ready for Tuesday's showdown at district co-leader Park View.

Osbourn's junior varsity team continues to roll. Tuesday's 66-7 win over Warren County was the team's 31st straight dating back to 1987. The Eagles are 9-0 this year, winning by an average of better than 40 points per game.

Coach Dennis Miller credits a team effort led by second-year starters Chrissie Elliott, Missy Augusti and Tonya Grayson.

Gar-Field 8, Osbourn Park 1: By the end of this week, Coach Lisa Clement will have a good idea what kind of girls tennis team she will have this season at Osbourn Park.

With scrimmages Wednesday against Paul VI and Thursday against James Wood, the coach will have her entire squad playing together for the first time this season.

The Yellow Jackets lost 8-1 to Gar-Field in a scrimmage Tuesday at Osbourn Park. The lone Jacket winner was freshman Jenny Gorman, who played at the fifth singles position.

Karin Walter, the No. 2 player, had been absent from the team, forcing each player to move up one position.

The Yellow Jackets have lost all three of their scrimmage matches this season.

'' We have to stay positive,'' Clement said. '' Our matches Wednesday and Thursday will be more indicative of our team.''

Osbourn 61, Courtland 17: Osbourn's girls basketball team improved its record to 4-0 Tuesday, opening its home schedule with a 61-17 rout of Courtland's Cougars.

The Eagles jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the first period and never looked back. Coach Anne Yeatts saw her team in front, 28-10, at halftime and 43-15 after three periods. Courtland, a Group AA school from the Battlefield District, trailed 39-9 with 2: 30 left in the third period before Yeatts pulled her starting five.

Center Katie Sinback led a balanced Osbourn attack with 12 points. Marijo Augusti added 10 for the winners, while Katie Croisetiere, the team's top reserve, and Heidi Leiter each scored eight.

Other scorers for the Eagles included Krista Austin ( six), Dana Verrone ( five), Tonya Corbin ( four), Brande Lowe ( four) and Kim Coleman ( two). The 44-point margin is Osbourn's largest to date. The Eagles were a 40-point victor at Courtland in the season opener nearly two weeks ago.

Storm blasts Chambersburg

BYLINE: By GREG FRAZIER

@@C

Despite losing three starters to graduation, the Osbourn High School girls basketball team appears primed to pick up where they left off last season.

Nine months after ending their most successful season ever with titles in both the Northwestern District and Region II, the Eagles opened the new season last Thursday with a 52-18 rout of visiting Courtland.

As expected, seniors Cara Cheatwood and Missy Peters led the way. Cheatwood had a game-high 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists despite sitting out the fourth quarter. Peters contributed 12 points, a team-high nine boards and four steals.

'' We had a major case of first-game jitters. I don't think we ever settled down in our offense,'' said Osbourn coach Anne Yeatts, leaving us to wonder about the winning margin had her team been relaxed.

The Eagles' style resembled the team that won 21 straight games before bowing out in the state quarterfinals last year. They ran when the opportunity was there, but also seemed content to work for the open shot when it was not.

In addition to Cheatwood and Peters, Yeatts was pleased with the play of junior center Katie Sinback, a standout on the district champion JV team a year ago. Sinback, who at 5-11 is the tallest Eagle, scored seven points and had five rebounds. More importantly, she played aggressively and didn't back down from Courtland's only experienced player, 5-10 senior Kelly Green.

'' Katie is a young junior. The progress she has made has been very encouraging,'' Yeatts said. '' She's very determined and hard-working. She handled herself well tonight.''

Sinback took it to Green on offense. As a result, Green became the second Cougar to foul out when she picked up her fifth personal in the closing moments of the game.

Sinback wasn't the only newcomer who impressed Yeatts. Sophomore Heidi Leiter saw a lot of action at point guard and fared well. Leiter and junior Dana Verrone, the sixth man for Yeatts last year, are being asked to replace all-district point guard Julie DeRamus. Leiter, the JV point guard last season, showed she can handle the ball while picking up two steals and four assists. Verrone seems able to replace DeRamus on defense. She had six steals to go along with five points in her second varsity start.

Marijo Augusti, another of the fine recruits Yeatts has welcomed off last year's JV team, came off the bench to pick up six points and two steals. Laura Mason and Tanya Corbin also scored for the Eagles.

Osbourn jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first period. Courtland went scoreless for the first 5: 08 of the game.

The Eagles led 26-8 at the half and 40-12 after three periods.

In the preliminary game, Osbourn's JV team blasted Courtland, 42-10. Katie Croisetiere and Chrissy Elliott paced the Eagles with 10 points each.
