West Potomac feels right at home in Fairfax

Team continues dominance of Cavalier Classic

WRESTLING

By BRIAN PERDUE Journal staff writer

West Potomac dominated the Cavalier Classic the two past years, leading the annual wrestling tournament at W.T. Woodson from beginning to end.

So last week when the Wolverines fell 40 points behind Woodson, West Potomac's Rick Seipp did what any good coach would do.

"After that first day, I gave them a good tongue-lashing," Seipp said. "I was highly irritated."

Judging from the results, if this coaching thing doesn't work out, perhaps Seipp could be a motivational speaker.

On the second and final day of the tournament, the Wolverines bounced back to edge Fairfax, 151.5 to 146.

Fairfax wrestlers Felix Hung (135 pounds) and Adam Turner (171) won their divisions in the eight-team tournament.

Only two Wolverines - Pat Cronin (119) and Abdul Kamara (130) - won their weight classes. Greg John finished first in the 98-pound division, but points weren't awarded at his weight.

"We made up the difference in the wrestle-backs," said Seipp, referring to the consolation round in which West Potomac recorded five third-place and three fourth-place finishes.

One of the most pivotal matches for the Wolverines came at 130. Kamara pinned Fairfax's Kia Kianersi in 1 minute, 20 seconds to help West Potomac take the lead.

Kamara (13-1) is coming off a junior year in which he placed second in the Patriot District and the Northern Region at 125.

According to Seipp, Kamara knew that he would take on Kianersi in the final bout.

"[Kamara] told me that morning that he was going to pin him," Seipp said.

Yet according to Seipp, the team title wasn't clinched until after the championship match at 215 pounds, when West Springfield's Brian McLain

pinned Fairfax's Mike Tatum.

The Spartans, who finished fourth with 122.5 points, also had Ben Guerrina (125) win his class.

"It was odd that we got some help from a district team," Seipp said.

Seipp said the seniors on this year's team have providing stronger leadership than their predecessors on previous squads.

Seniors Kamara, Ryan Autry (152), Ken Croisetiere (140) and Rod Williams (160) have all made the coaching easier, according to Seipp.

Woodson scored 143.5 points to place third. Cavaliers Adam Wolf (112), Mike Phalan (140), James Garcia (145) and Steven Busch (heavyweight) won their weight classes.

Woodson scored only 18 points, but ralled for a 127.5 to 126 lead over Fairfax after the early going in Day 2. But then the roof caved in.

"We were leading going into the consolation semifinals, then our kids decided to stop wrestling back," said Woodson coach Paul Labbazetta.

"It's a matter of a point here, a guy placing there. We had our opportunities."

Phalan, a senior, improved to 12-2, including 10 pins. His only losses were to Justin Gabbard of Tallwood in the NOVA Classic.

Phalan will challenge top-ranked Paul Bjorlo of South Lakes on Wednesday in a double-dual meet at Potomac Falls.
